I am writing to you from a hotel room in Florida for the last time as I am returning to my stomping grounds of Lafourche Parish tomorrow.

I still do not have 100 percent confirmation, but we have heard from reliable sources that our home is OK, so God definitely protected us through this whole ordeal.

The people of Florida treated us like Kings the entire time we were here and I am forever grateful.

But back to business. The big story of the day was first that LSU has canceled classes for the rest of the week and Saturday’s game against Troy is in question.

I was told by reliable sources that LSU coach Les Miles would prefer to not play the game Saturday, but LSU athletic Joe Alleva would prefer to play the game because pushing it back takes away LSU’s “mulligan” if another storm were to threaten the Louisiana coast later in the season.

So we will see how that plays out. My gut tells me Miles might win in this one and they might push the game back.

Time will tell.

Looking ahead to Troy, I warn Tiger fans that yes, Troy is a cupcake-conference team. But no, they are not an easy-out by any means, beating Oklahoma State, having lost to Georgia by just 10 points last season and scoring more than 25+ points against both Arkansas and Florida.

This season, Troy is 1-0 with a 31-17 road win against Middle Tennessee under their belt.

Sophomore DuJuan Harris is the stud of the Trojans’ offense, rushing for 148 yards and two touchdowns in the opener.

Sophomore Jamie Hampton is the Trojan quarterback and while it is hard to fully tell, because Troy lost so many contributors off this past season’s team, it appears they have tweaked their spread offense more toward the running game, so this will be a good test for the LSU defense.

I will give you more on this game as the week progresses.

SEC games:

South Carolina (1-0, 0-0) at Vanderbilt (1-0, 0-0)

7:30 CDT Thursday

Keys for S. Carolina:

1. Smelley situation – After watching starter Tommy Beecher throw four INTs against NC State, Steve Spurrier went to backup Chris Smelley and he delivered going 5-5 with 2 TDs. If Smelley plays this way all season, the Cocks will be SEC East contenders.

2. Linebacker Play – Chris Nickson was a maniac for Vandy in the season opener. But if S. Carolina holds him down, the Vanderbilt offense will crumble.

Keys for Vandy:

1. Run Chris Run – Chris Nickson ran for 166 yards in the team’s opener against Miami (OH). If he can emulate that and get in space, he will reak havoc on the SEC this year.

2. Ground and pound – Vanderbilt has one of the least experienced offensive lines in the SEC. But that did not show last Thursday as they got 270 ground yards and held their opponent below 100 ground yards.

Predictions will come later in the week:

Southern Miss (1-0) at Auburn (1-0, 0-0) 11:30 CDT Saturday

Keys for Auburn:

1. Steady Chris Todd – Kodi Burns was injured in the season opener and the Tigers need Todd to play his best in what can potentially be a trap game.

2. Click, click, boom – Auburn’s offense better click in a hurry. Sure, a 34-0 win in the opener is nice. But Auburn should get more than 100 yards passing against UL-Monroe.

Keys for USM:

1. Play downhill – Southern Miss had 600+ total yards against UL-Lafayette, including more than 400 yards rushing. If they can replicate that, they can challenge the rusty Tigers.

2. Pass rush – Auburn has a kid making his first career start. Punch him in the mouth early and he may wilt and crumble.

Prediction: Later in the week.

Top 10:

I began this what seems like forever ago. But I will continue it today. I am doing a Top 10 list of the most overrated athletes.

Here is No. 9:

No. 9 most overrated athlete – Jeff Francoeur

This one is an easy pick this year with Frenchy playing as poorly as he has. But even when he was playing “well,” he was always overrated, always having a low .300 OBP and a horrible K/BB ratio.

Francoeur is very, very young and he may become a solid MLB player. He just is not the force that the media made him out to be when he came up a few seasons ago.

No. 8 comes tomorrow.

Couture and Lesnar to meet in UFC showdown – Cody will tell you more about this, I’m sure. But wow, what a matchup. Out with the old and in with the new as this is old school vs. new school 100 percent.

USC new #1 in polls – This is fair in my eyes. They destroyed a 2007 9-win team on the road, while UGA struggled with Ga-Southern. The Trojans deserve to be #1.

Saints to play in Superdome Sunday – That’s a relief. A few years removed from being an NFL team without a home, the Saints will be able to be home again Sunday after Gustav.

YouTube Video of the Day:

Take care, folks. If LSU makes a decision regarding the Troy game tomm, I will let you guys know if I am not on the road.
